The Pauls Lane Chardonnay was hand harvested from Toolangi’s original 1995 plantings (I1OV3 clone grapes on D Block rows 35-55), crushed and pressed with full solids straight to oak (20% new). Fermentations were wild and the wine spent eight months on lees in barrel before bottling. Again this has real depth of fruit (nectarine, grapefruit, lemon pith), but also plenty of smoky, matchsticky like oak/reduction and racy, punchy drive. It’s also super complex with a twist of savoury, fresh cut herbs on the long, refreshing close. First rate and absolutely unique Yarra Chardonnay.
Toolangi Vineyards Pauls Lane Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a delicious chardonnay release from Toolangi in the Yarra Valley. The fruit is from Dixon’s Creek and the wine made by highly regarded winemaker, David Bicknell, at Oakridge. This may be the best release yet I have tasted of a Toolangi chardonnay. It has aromatics of struck match, cashew and minerals. The palate has fresh and racy acidity, with good length and balance.
