Provenance Golden Plains Pinot Noir is a brilliant, deep red. Spicy fruit aromas of raspberry and plum are supported by an earthy, savoury clove-like bouquet.
Plush and rich, this sweet-fruited wine is laden with lively flavour that is matched to lovely graphite like texture. The long finish is cut with bright natural acid that balances its generous nature.
The 2013/2014 growing season began with a cool, wet and windy spring. These unsettled conditions had a significant impact on flowering and resultant yields were extremely low, in the order of 0.5 to 0.8t/ac. The following warm, dry January concentrated both fruit flavour and weight in the lead up to an early harvest. Across the blend 30% whole bunches were fermented in small open-top fermenters, with whole berries (no crushing) making up the balance. Generally, it took around 3 days for indigenous ferments to begin; all had peak temperatures of 32-33°C. Post pressing, the wine was settled hard prior to being racked to French oak barriques and puncheons, 32% new. Natural MLF took place in barrel during 10 months’ maturation prior to blending and bottling.
On tasting a supple, silky texture is evident. Fruit flavours, true to the promised aromas, are across the mid-palate and are balanced by fine-grained tannins. A fresh line of natural acid keeps all in check. A charming wine to drink now or age over the medium term.
