James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2014
A distinguished estate with a proud, even if relatively short, history. Long renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon, its repertoire has steadily grown, with the emphasis on single varietal wines. The style overall is fruit rather than oak-driven.
Leconfield Coonawarra was established by noted oenologist, Sydney Hamilton, in the southern half of the Coonawarra strip. The vineyard occupies some of the area’s richest terra rossa soil over limestone, a composition for which Coonawarra is famous. During his winemaking career spanning nearly 60 years, Sydney was highly regarded for his contribution to the industry. In 1981, with 65 vintages under his belt,
Sydney decided to finally retire and Leconfield was acquired by his nephew, Dr Richard Hamilton, then based in McLaren Vale.
Leconfield Cabernet Merlot 2012 a full, ripe with vibrant blood plum characters, this wine shows perfumed
cinnamon and a touch of mint on the nose. It has a clean, elegant oak lift that will develop some rustic cedar box characters given a few years of age.
This wine will best match full flavoured meals, such as tender beef or duck, or full flavoured vegetarian dishes.
CELLARING POTENTIAL – Whilst being crafted to allow for sufficient elegance and softness to make it
appeal in its youth, the structure to reward 6-8 years of cellaring.
Wine of the Week, 93 points (2012 vintage)
“Beautiful example of this vintage in Coonawarra. Seductive perfume of red fruits with a little mint and red currant playing over the deep dark plum and blackcurrant characters. So seamless and balanced on the palate, with super-fine tannins and silky oak in support. This is such a good current drink, yet there is the substance to handle further cellaring. Only just coming into WA so ask your local to get it in. A most underrated and impressive producer. 93/100″

“…smooth and easygoing…” (2012 vintage)
“Deep red/purple colour. Soft, smoky, meaty, subtle aroma notes, the palate smooth and easygoing with very soft, fluffy tannins. A trace of bitterness, not a worry. Some tannin grip. Good drinking.”
