Fruit was crushed, destemmed and then hand plunged utilising open top fermentation. Followed by traditional basket pressing in our 1928 basket press.
The wine then matured in a combination of American, French and Eastern European oak barrels for 14 months.
Bordering St. Vincent’s Gulf, 40kms south of Adelaide, the Kay Brothers McLaren Vale Amery Vineyards grace the rolling foothills of the Southern Mt. Lofty Ranges. Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers, Herbert and Frederick Kay, the Heritage listed Kays Amery Winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1895 and is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands with third generation Colin Kay continuing the family winemaking tradition.
The 2014 vintage began with good winter and spring rainfall which provided the vines with a healthy canopy. Windy conditions during flowering and a nasty hail storm meant yields were low. A warm start to summer was met by 59 mm of rain in February, following this; final ripening conditions were cool allowing delicate flavors to develop slowly, producing balanced wines.
The vineyard has a predominately eastern exposure. Soil varies from sandy loam at the top of the hill to heavier loam and clay as it transcends down the hill towards the creek. The dry climate forces the vine roots, ranging from 15 – 20 years, to delve into the ancient underlying geology consisting of quartz, ironstone and limestone.

2017 ‘Basket Pressed’ Shiraz
“94 points + Special Value”
There’s a soft, luscious potpourri of flavours, sultry black fruits and dark chocolate the prime movers, the tannins spot on. Another version of ’17’s magic.” – James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion ’20
93 Points – Some more classical nutty oak and ripe earthy fruit on offer here, this has plenty of richness and ripeness with a liquorice and spice edge. Some assertive powder dry tannins on the palate, holding bright sweet plum and dark cherry fruit flavor in deep. Great balance. Drink now to 2025. – Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com, February 2016
