The Oscar’s Folly Chardonnay block is picked early in the season to enhance the elegance and structure that cool-climate Yarra Valley Chardonnay typically displays. The fruit is 100% handpicked and whole bunch pressed then transferred to barrel for fermentation using only wild yeasts. Once primary ferment in complete, the wine is aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 10% new, with occasional lees stirring to add complexity and mouth feel to the wine.
The Yarra Valley experienced a cool, yet relatively dry 2018 winter with below average rainfall. Similar conditions continued into early Spring with some much needed warmth coming at the right time to allow for a successful flowering period in late November and healthy crop loads. Timely rain throughout December was a godsend and helped get the vines through the important stages of fruit set and veraison. As the vineyard entered 2019’s true summer, temperatures soared consistently into the high 30’s, keeping the viticulture team on their toes until harvest. The result of these conditions have the 2019 wines displaying rich, full bodied characteristics.
The aromas of the 2019 Oscar’s Folly Chardonnay are white stone fruit, melon and citrus. The palate reflects the nose with a combination of white stone fruit, melon and citrus matched perfectly with vibrant acidity. Fresh and bright, this is a classic cool climate chardonnay that maintains the tightness and vibrancy that Yarra Valley chardonnay is known for all the way to the clean finish.
