Cabernet is called the king of grapes and at Zonte’s Footstep it is so revered. Arthurian Legend had it that whoever could pull Excalibur from the stone ruled under the Avalon Tree would be king. Wonderful cigar box and supple fruit flavors continue through the complex and long, very long finish. This wine hangs about after you have tasted it for so long it seems almost self-defeating, although you want another sip it is still in the mouth. Precise ‘line and length’ that lingers on and on with blackcurrant. Zonte’s Footstep Avalon Tree Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 is unctuous interesting complex but still will the fruit fullness of youth. Minutes later, the flavor still lingers.
Pure blackberry pastille and choc-mint aromas are the center piece of the bouquet, offset by a sprig of thyme; full-bodied and bordering on jammy, yet not overstepping the mark, the forward and fleshy nature of this wine will provide pleasure in the short to medium term.
Zonte’s Footstep is a proudly independent Australian wine company. We take our vineyards and our wine, but not ourselves, seriously. Mr. Ben Riggs and Zar Brooks teamed together with a group of mates to launch Zonte’s Footstep from vintage 2003 and the wines are now at the vanguard of a revolution of Australian wine styles. Zonte’s Footstep is named after a 19th century Zante currant vineyard as new plantings follow the original footstep. The currant business dried up, but Zonte’s Footstep became our blueprint… In 2003 we pooled old white utes and new-ish tractors to grow the best grapes from the best vineyards. All we want to do is taste our fruit in our wine, so we charged our reigning winemaker, Mr. Ben Riggs, with one goal; to make wine true to vineyard so long as it is a bloody good drink!
The truth is out there in the vineyard but the proof is in the bottle.
