The Ashton Hills Reserve Pinot Noir has long since rung my bells. It’s long and sinewy and yet flush with gorgeously ripe, seductive fruit and oak flavour. Black pepper, cherry plum, swish cedary notes, cranberry and rose petals.
Clovey, gum-leaf notes also play a role, as does a a slight kick of alcohol on the finish. For pure, meaty/spicy, concentrated power, this wine takes some beating.
“96 Points. This has a complex bouquet of charcuterie, earth and oak with some peppery, crushed seashell and stalky whole-bunch ferment touches. In the mouth, it’s concentrated, supple and again complex, the texture yielding and the flavour persistent” – Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine, June/ July 2017.
“94 Points. Assertive bouquet of fine, cedary oak, clove and walnut husks, but well meshed in pickled and fresh dark cherry fruit with just a whiff of cranberry. The palate is gently sappy, sticks softly to the palate, shows excellent length, offers bright, forward, amaro-kissed cherry fruit character, a touch of breathy kirsch as it lingers. Gentle yet loaded with flavour, it’s a complex, elegant pinot noir of easy access, control and yet assertion. Delighted to see it.” – Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.
