Beautiful wine. Lots of character. – Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)Bruce Chalmers’ love of Malbec drove him to head to the modern home of of the variety, Argentina, to source their superior Malbec clones.
“Beautiful wine. Lots of character. Leather, berries, licorice and dry spice. Florals. Crushed gum leaves. Just love the flow and finesse of it – in a characterful context.” – Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
These vines are thriving in the Chalmers’ Heathcote vineyard. Each year they get a little older, the fruit gets a little better.
In 2017 they’ve knocked it out of the park. This is a rich, silky vibrant red with loads of character and likely the best release to date under this label. Value for money wise, this is a standout release from the Chalmers family.
A cracking example of modern Australian Malbec at a very tidy price. No family in Australia has done more for the continued emergence of alternative grape varieties than the Chalmers.
Since the mid-1980’s Bruce and Jenni Chalmers have been responsible for importing up to 70 alternative varieties into Australia, culminating in them establishing the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show in 1999.
They are true visionaries of the Australian wine scene and we are eternally grateful for their forward thinking and courage to bravely plant what no one had planted before them.
They brought with them the first ripples of the tsunami of Italian varieties hitting the Australian market.
